In this chat, members talk about the very real challenges of maintaining focus and motivation as well as fighting the opposite extreme of over-working and never taking necessary breaks. The group talks about how isolation can kill your productivity and the need to stay engaged with other people through meet-up groups and networking, or working on client sites, even if you don’t need to. As software developers we have a tendency to want to build a solution from scratch for any problem we may have. This is not necessarily the most cost effective way to handle your challenges and it often becomes a low priority in that we often think we will build the perfect solution when we have time for it (think cobblers kids wear no shoes…). In this member’s only chat, talk about the various internal tools they need and what tools they have found effective. In this member’s only chat Jeff London, Christos Lianides-Chin, and Lisette Wilson talk about the various challenges of taking time off as a sole proprietor/business owner. Question include how do you manage/cover your clients while you are away? How to you plan for/compensate for loss of income during your absence? How do you schedule “mini-breaks” if you really can’t take time off but you know you need to refuel. Please check out the audio and join the conversation with your own challenges and suggestions. Have you ever had a client ask you to partner with them to resell a service or product you developed specifically for them? One of our members was presented with such an opportunity and wanted some input from people who had successfully engaged in a similar model. We spun up a quick conference call and had 15 members jump on the call to share advice. One of the outcomes of this meeting is the group would like to meet again to consolidate best practices for evaluating and setting up similar situations. Scott Howard has agreed to help us continue this discussion moving forward and ideally generate what we’re calling a “homework checklist” (thanks Lisette Wilson for the great idea!) both for the client and for you. If you’re interested in being part of this discussion, please email me and I’ll add you to the Product Discussion group for further email updates. In addition, you can listen to the recording of the live call below or download an mp3 of the audio here.
